Ngai Te Rangi Today
Ngai Te Rangi is the largest of the three iwi of Tauranga Moana in both size of Rohe and Population. Statistics from the 2001 Census show a number of key points:
- In 2001, 9,561 people, or nearly 2 percent of the
Mäori population, belonged to Ngai Te Rangi. This was 2,739 more than at the 1996 Census – a 40 percent increase.
- Sixty-six percent of Ngai Te Rangi iwi members also
affiliated with another iwi group or groups.
- Forty-four percent of all Ngai Te Rangi lived in the
Bay of Plenty region, 18 percent in the Auckland region and 15 percent in the Waikato region.
- Most Ngai Te Rangi (86 percent) lived in urban areas
(towns or cities of 1,000 people or more), with four out of five of these urban dwellers living in areas with populations of 30,000 or more.
Some Ngai Te Rangi hapu run a number of commercial enterprises including the largest Zespri Kiwifruit orchard in New Zealand and extensive farming and forestry initiatives. Fishing is also another major initiative currently being undertaken by some members and hapu of the tribe.
