Ngâi Te Rangi Today
Ngâi Te Rangi is the largest of the three iwi of Tauranga Moana in both size of Rohe and Population. Statistics from the 2006 Census show a number of key points:
- In 2006, 12,201 people, or 2 percent of the
total population, belonged to Ngâi Te Rangi. This was 2,640 more than at the 2001 Census – a 27.6 percent increase.
- Sixty-nine percent of Ngâi Te Rangi iwi members also
affiliated with another iwi group or groups.
- Forty-two percent of all Ngâi Te Rangi lived in the
Bay of Plenty region, 19 percent in the Auckland region and 14 percent in the Waikato region.
- Thirty-five percent of Ngā Te Rangi were aged under 15 years, 24 percent 15-29 years, 36 percent 30-64 years, 5% 65 years and over
Some Ngâi Te Rangi hapü run a number of commercial enterprises including the largest Zespri Kiwifruit orchard in New Zealand and extensive farming and forestry initiatives. Fishing is also another major initiative currently being undertaken by some members and hapü of the tribe.
