Te Reo, Culture, Education and Research
Ngaiterangi Iwi know that our Reo forms the bastion of our identity, our pride and our tikanga. In recognition of that commitment, Ngaiterangi Iwi has held three hikoi along the east coast under the auspices of 'T eHeke o te Rangihouhiri'. These hikoi took place in 1989, 1991 and 2002. Ngaiterangi Iwi has continued to progress Te Reo as a paramount issue for our people. Te Runanga o Ngaiterangi hopes to establish a Reo, Culture, Education and Research Unit in 2007.
Te Reo
In 2005, Ngaiterangi Iwi initiated a small number of activities related to advancing our reo further. Launched in 2006, Ngaiterangi Iwi held two wananga reo, one at Matakana Island, the other at Tahuwhakatiki Marae in the Welcome Bay. Ngaiterangi Iwi also took a lead role in facilitating a Kura Reo a Rohe o Tauranga Moana. This was held at Otawhiwhi Marae, 8-11 October.
The Kura Reo was excellent; this was held with Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga and founded upon a model of teaching emphasising taught classes in the morning, and wananga in the afternoon. Evenings were spent with fun activities such as ‘po patapatai' and ‘taupatupatu'. Ngati Ranginui Iwi will be holding the next Kura Reo in 2007.
The Ngaiterangi Iwi Chairperson, Hauata Palmer is a member of the advisory group to the Community Based Language Initiative, run by Te Matahauariki. He is also actively involved in the Arataki Manukorero programme, facilitated by Te Wananga o Aotearoa. The Iwi actively supports the aspirations of our whanau to progress their own Te Reo through these activities. Kia kaha tatou ki te whai i te reo rangatira!
The Iwi staff members have also initiated a monthly hikoi up Mauao, as a means of speaking Te Reo Maori. Our team were finalists in the 2006, Taura Whiri I te Reo Maori Reo Awards.
Research and Development
Ngaiterangi Iwi has been involved in two key projects in 2006. The first project related to the Whanau Development Action Research Project, facilitated through Te Puni Kokiri. This project had a number of goals:
1. To provide two wananga reo for Ngaiterangi Iwi people. 2. To provide facilitators with opportunities to participate in Kura Reo training. 3. To undertake marae reo plans with Ngaiterangi Iwi marae. 4. To undertake a literature review.
The project was for four months and concluded with an evaluative report conducted by an outside agency to Te Puni Kokiri. The findings from that report will help Ngaiterangi identify issues related to progressing Te Reo for our people.
Ngaiterangi Iwi is also working in partnership with Te Wananga o Awanuiarangi to conduct a research project focused upon Te Reo in the Kainga. A Ngaiterangi Iwi researcher will work closely with Ngaiterangi Whanau (5-6 whanau) to undertake indepth discussions about their reo aspirations, and how over a 12 month period the interventions considered by the whanau, with the research team will advance Te Reo in a collaborative way. The project is founded upon a kaupapa Maori research methodology, drawing from action research principles.
