Tena koutou e te Iwi. We are proud to report the establishment of a Resource Management Unit (RMU) for Ngaiterangi Iwi. The main task of the RMU is to "protect our environment, culture, heritage and values". This is a high priority initiative which has full support and commitment from the Ngaiterangi Iwi Runanga.
Firstly, it is important to outline the principles under which the RMU operates. These are:
- Tino Rangatiratanga - for Ngaiterangi by Ngaiterangi
- Mana whenua and Kaitiakitanga remains with the Hapu
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins the relationship with the Crown
- Te Kotahitanga - Stronger together than alone
- Our relationship with the whenua and moana endures forever
There are many benefits for operating such a unit, some examples being:
- Protection of our environment, culture, heritage and values
- Mitigation of cultural impacts in the rohe
- Participation in the RMA process at all levels
- Preservation of our values in long term district and regional plans
