Te Tari Taiao (The Resource Management Unit) is the environmental hub for Te Runanga o Ngāi Te Rangi.  It strives to uphold the vision of the iwi, with specific reference to the environment and kaitiakitanga for our people. Our range of responsibilities includes involvement in resource consent applications, monitoring projects including earthworks, water quality and cultural sensitivity, legislative development in the form of Iwi and Hapū Management Plans, Hapū representation on the Kaitiaki Forum and Iwi representation on Environmental based Council forums. The objective of the unit is to boost the Kaitiakitanga, Matauranga, Kotahitanga and Rangatiratanga of ngā Hapū to empower Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi.

“To uphold the Mana and Tino Rangatiratanga of Ngāi Te Rangi by advancing the environmental and kaitiakitanga development of Nga Hapū o Ngāi Te Rangi”.

Major Projects Description Current Status
Port of Tauranga Dredging The port wants to widen and deepen the main shipping channel in the Tauranga Harbour. This requires the dredging and dumping of 15 million cubic tones of seabed. Reconvened in November. The Court requested more information from the Port of Tauranga and now we await the Court decision due mid 2012.
Subdivision of Matakana Island Blakely Pacific forests want to sell and subdivide 4,000 acres of land on Matakana Island. This is a large scale project, impacting the local Hapu significantly.

The Appeal made by 'Ngā hapū o Te Moutere o Matakana' to the Environment Court was successful.

Kauri Point Pā Restoration Project This project allows Tāngata Whenua to reconnect with a significant heritage Pa site in Katikati. Currently designing layout and preparing budgets for construction, planting and maintenance of Pā site
